Manuel de Falla y Matheu

Died in Alta Gracia, Argentina on November 14, 1946


Manuel de Falla was born in Cádiz, the oldest continuously inhabited
city in Western Europe, founded in 1104 BC. His first teacher was his
mother until he began professional lessons at the age of nine.

When his family moved to Madrid after a change of their fortunes,
Manuel de Falla helped to support his family by composing Zarzuelas -
typical Spanish operettas.

In 1907, Falla achieved a long-held ambition of moving to Paris and
was welcomed there by Ravel, Debussy, and Dukas; all having an
influence on his future composing style. His first substantial stage work
was the short (only one hour in length) two-act opera "La Vida Breve"
(Life Is Short), completed in 1905 but revised before premiering in Nice,
France in 1913.

Returning to Spain at the beginning of the first World War 1914, never
being a prolific composer, it was when living in Granada during 1921 to
1939 that he entered into his mature creative period, composing several
of his most important works.
